 South Carolina PrePass Online!

In 2007 more than 20 sites and over 22,000 trucks joined the program

PHOENIX (12/12/2007) – South Carolina became the 28th state to install PrePass®, deploying the on-highway, safety technology at Anderson Northbound on Interstate 85.

PrePass is a sophisticated technology that enables qualified motor carriers to comply electronically with state weight, safety and credential requirements at highway speeds.

Motor carrier participation is strictly voluntary and carrier eligibility is subject to state safety qualifications.

By enabling enforcement personnel to concentrate on those trucks most likely to be non compliant, and by reducing lane-changing and congestion around weigh stations, PrePass can make highways safer for all motorists.

PrePass is a benefit to South Carolina motor carriers according to Rick Todd, president of the South Carolina Trucking Association, “South Carolina’s decision to deploy PrePass is a big boost to our carriers because it will save them time and fuel as they travel throughout the state and the Southeastern US.”

Since its inception in 1995, PrePass has saved carriers nearly $1.3 billion in operational costs. PrePass lessens dependence on foreign sources of oil and reduces greenhouse emissions by reducing fuel consumption and idling inherent to waiting in inspection queues.  Based on EPA engine idle reduction estimates, PrePass has reduced emissions by more than 215 million kg.

“We warmly welcome South Carolina into the PrePass family of states committed to improving safety and making our highways more efficient for commercial motor carriers,” said Richard P. Landis, president and CEO of HELP Inc.

Launched in California in 1995, PrePass® is now operational at 280 sites in 28 states including:  Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Nearly 450,000 trucks have voluntarily enrolled in PrePass to take advantage of the time and money saving benefits.
