What is PrePass Plus?
The PrePass Plus Program utilizes one transponder and customer service center to combine all of the benefits of the PrePass weigh station bypassing network with the E-ZPass toll collection system that enables electronic payment of tolls throughout the Northeast. Approximately one mile before a PrePass equipped weigh station, a driver will receive a green light on the In-Cab Device (ICD) or transponder, signaling to continue on and bypass the weigh station. Occasionally, the driver will receive a red light, signaling to stop at the weigh station or port-of-entry. At E-ZPass equipped toll plazas, drivers are able to pay their tolls electronically without needing to stop at a traditional toll booth. Drivers should check with their company to verify if they have accessibility to both functions or “tolls only.”
Which lane should I be using?

Toll Facilities - Look for the distinctive purple and white E-ZPass logo signs whenever you use a toll facility. The signs will direct you for that particular toll plaza.

Weigh Stations - Always stay in the right lane when approaching weigh station facilities.

What if I get into a lane that is not equipped with E-ZPass?
You must pay the toll in cash.
If the toll facility or weigh station is closed, will I be billed?

Toll Facilities - Yes, toll facilities are always active. At times a toll facility may be ‘unmanned’, so you’ll still need to follow the signal, signs or the message board displays and proceed as normal. Your account will be charged each time you pass through a toll facility.

Weigh Stations - No, when a weigh station is closed it will have no bearing on your PrePass Plus account. Always follow your transponder signal.

Won't I get pulled over for not pulling into a weigh station?
PrePass is authorized by state law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement officers are aware of the PrePass Plus program and will expect you to follow your in-cab signals.
If I receive a green light at one participating weigh station, will I receive a green light for every weigh station?
No. All trucks are subject to a random pull-in. Depending on your company’s safety rating, you are subject to a random pull-in rate between 5% - 100%. These random pull-ins ensure that PrePass and participating carriers are adhering to the state requirements. For special inspection reasons, the station master has the option of pulling in every truck passing by that station. Bypass rules vary from state to state; therefore you may be valid to bypass in some states but not in others. (Please refer to the Weigh Station Bypassing restrictions by state section).
Are there any times I should not use my transponder?

Yes - If you have reported your transponder lost or stolen, but later find it, call the PrePass Customer Service Center and ask to speak to a PrePass Plus representative. You must be issued a new transponder even if you find your original transponder. Once a transponder is reported lost, it cannot be reactivated.

Yes - If you are using a different class vehicle that would result in a violation (i.e. Type Mismatch Violation for incorrect Vehicle Reference Number). For example, if you are a commercial vehicle with a combined axle count of 5 and haul a trailer that is 48’ or lower, you would be issued a transponder with a vehicle reference number of 791. In an instance where your trailer exceeds 48’, you are advised to not pay the toll electronically with that transponder (‘791’) because it was coded for a different type of vehicle. This type of misuse may permanently suspend a transponder. (See Vehicle Reference Chart)

Yes - If your transponder has been suspended due to excessive speeding violations, you will be notified via email, mail or fax. This transponder must NOT be used at toll facilities until the suspension period has expired. Use of a suspended transponder will result in a toll evasion notice being issued and associated administrative fees incurred. Suspended transponders must be placed in cellophane when traveling through a toll booth. (If they are not placed in cellophane, they will be charged the appropriate toll and confiscated when you attempt to travel through the toll booth.)

*Keep the cellophane pouch that was provided with your transponder.

What should I do if I don’t receive any lights on my transponder?
Toll Facilities - You will not receive any signals on your PrePass Plus transponder for the E-ZPass toll facilities. Follow only the indicators on the message board.

Weigh Stations - If you receive no lights on your PrePass Plus transponder, you are required to pull into the weigh stations. If you think your transponder may be inoperable, please contact the PrePass Customer Service Center, and we’ll troubleshoot the transponder or ship another transponder out immediately.
Under what circumstances would I receive a violation?

There are four situations in which you can receive a violation:

Speeding: traveling through the toll lane at a speed in excess of the posted limit (5 mph).

Toll Evasion: driving though a lane without a valid transponder mounted on your vehicle. This would be a result of a suspension or transponder that had been reported lost/stolen.

Class Mismatch: the vehicle class of the transponder you are using does not match that of the vehicle you are driving.

Bypassing weigh station with a red light: if you receive a red light and bypass a weigh station, your last signal can be identified by law enforcement and you could be cited for not responding to a no-bypass signal.

How do I know my PrePass Plus transponder is working?

Toll Facilities – You will not receive any signals on your PrePass Plus transponder for the E-ZPass toll facilities, only indicators on the message board should be followed.

Weigh Stations - If you see a green light or red light when approaching a weigh station facility, then your transponder is working correctly. If your transponder is properly affixed to the cab windshield and the transponder is still not showing any lights, please contact the PrePass Customer Service Center.

How do I close my account?

NOTE: Please check with your company for proper authorization upon closing accounts. To close your PrePass Plus account, mail your PrePass Plus transponder to the PrePass Customer Service Center at the following address:

PrePass Plus Device Returns
510 Parkland Drive
Sandy, UT 84070

*Insuring the Transponders in the Amount of $100 each is strongly recommended * When you mail your transponder, you must enclose a signed statement that you wish to close your account. If written authorization is not received, it will delay closure of your account and additional monthly fees may be incurred. Proof of delivery of returned transponders is required to avoid fees associated with unreturned devices. PrePass will assess a processing fee of $100 per device for failure to return PrePass Plus transponders no longer assigned to vehicles enrolled in PrePass.

What if I change my license plate?

You must immediately contact the Customer Service Center. **Please have your registration and transponder ready when you call, as we will need information from both to quickly assist you.**

Can I turn my transponder off?

Toll Facilities - No, the transponder is always active. This means that any time the transponder goes through a toll it will be charged. If carrying the transponder in another vehicle, it must be in the cellophane wrap that was provided with your transponder. Keep cellophane wrap in an accessible location.

Weigh Stations – Yes, we can deactivate the weigh station service. However, the toll portion of the service will always be active even if the weigh station service is deactivated.

How is a carrier billed?

PrePass Plus customers are billed twice a month. Customers can view their detailed bill and make payments by logging on to ‘My PrePass’ and clicking on the ‘Billing and Payment Center on the ‘My Account’ tab.

What steps should I take if I receive a violation notice from an E-ZPass agency?

Review the notice and write the following information on it:

  • Your PrePass Plus account number;
  • Your contact name and telephone number (for follow-up);
  • Vehicle’s unit number, license plate, and transponder number (0040…); and
  • The date that the vehicle was added to your PrePass Plus account (if known).

Fax both sides to (866) 226-7157; Attn: PrePass Plus Violations Department.

The violation(s) will be researched and appropriate action taken.
